Equity Bank Uganda Appoints Henry Rugamba as Board Chairman

Equity Bank Uganda Limited has appointed Henry Rugamba as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective June 15, 2026.

Rugamba takes over from Mark Ocitti, who has retired after serving as Director and Chairman of the Board. The bank described the appointment as a significant step in strengthening its governance and strategic leadership.

With more than 30 years of experience in public relations, communications, and corporate affairs, Rugamba is widely known for his work in stakeholder engagement, reputation management, crisis communications, and strategic advisory services. He holds a degree in Politics and International Law from Makerere University.

He currently serves as Chairman of BAT Uganda and Harris International Uganda and has advised numerous organisations in both the public and private sectors on communications and corporate strategy.

Outside the corporate sector, Rugamba serves on the board of ANECCA Medical Charity, which supports HIV/AIDS care in Karamoja. He is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Kampala and is involved in various community and humanitarian initiatives.

Equity Bank Uganda said Rugamba’s leadership style, strategic insight, and governance experience make him well suited to guide the board as the bank pursues its growth agenda.

The bank also paid tribute to outgoing Chairman Mark Ocitti for his contribution during his tenure. Under his leadership, Equity Bank Uganda recorded significant progress in market consolidation, institutional growth, and long-term value creation for shareholders.

Equity Group Holdings Plc Chairman Prof. Isaac Macharia welcomed Rugamba’s appointment, saying his experience and leadership would help drive the bank’s next phase of growth. He also thanked Ocitti for his dedicated service and contribution to the board over the years.
