As part of milestones in advancing Uganda’s digital future, MTN Uganda has delivered its statutory 2% levy to Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), in which half of which goes to the Consolidated Fund and the other half is retained to finance the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund.
This contribution supports the extension of reliable communications services to underserved and unserved communities across Uganda, in line with the Uganda Communications Act, which is key in driving digital inclusion, universal access, and national connectivity for all Ugandans.
MTN Uganda’s remittance of its statutory 2% levy on annual gross revenue reflects the strong partnership between the regulator and licensed operators in advancing Uganda’s digital transformation agenda.
The contribution supports ICT skills development through the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology and enables the expansion of reliable communications services to unserved and underserved communities, including commercially unviable areas.
While this is a licence obligation, MTN Uganda was hailed for the consistency, timeliness, and commitment with which it fulfils this responsibility. By embracing the levy as a contribution to national development rather than a compliance requirement, MTN continues to demonstrate responsible corporate citizenship and a shared commitment to digital inclusion for all Ugandans.
The UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo commended MTN for fulfilling its responsibility with consistency and good faith, describing it as a shared investment in national development rather than a burden.
He noted that the UGX 54.27 billion contribution, an increase from last year, is evidence of a flourishing sector and a strong signal of corporate citizenship aligned with UCC’s vision of a fully Connected Uganda by 2030. “We thank MTN Uganda for viewing this responsibility not as a burden, but as a shared investment in Uganda’s future,” said Thembo.
