The name draws inspiration from Uganda’s reputation as the Pearl of Africa
A year after rebranding from PostBank Uganda to Pearl Bank, the bank says the change has been about more than a new name and logo. It has marked a new chapter in its efforts to position itself as a Ugandan-owned bank focused on expanding financial inclusion and supporting economic growth.
The rebrand, approved by shareholders in June last year, introduced a new name, visual identity and brand message while retaining the bank’s long-standing commitment to serving Ugandans.
According to Priscilla Akora, Head of Marketing and Communications at Pearl Bank, the new identity reflects both the bank’s ambitions and the country’s identity.
“Changing our name was not an end in itself. It was an opportunity to present a brand that reflects who we are and where we want to go. Pearl Bank speaks to our commitment to grow with Ugandans and support their aspirations.”
The name draws inspiration from Uganda’s reputation as the Pearl of Africa.
Akora says the choice was deliberate. “The Pearl is something every Ugandan identifies with. It represents beauty, resilience and value. We wanted a name that resonates with our customers and reflects our belief in Uganda’s potential.”
The bank says its strategy is anchored on fostering prosperity by making financial services more accessible while supporting entrepreneurs, farmers and businesses.
It has continued to invest in products designed for small businesses, agriculture, school fees financing and digital banking through the Pearl Bank App, Wendi Mobile Wallet and USSD services.
Akora says the impact of financial inclusion is best understood through everyday experiences.
“Think about a maize farmer in Rakai who needs financing at the start of the planting season. With access to credit, they can buy inputs, harvest better, sell to a ready market, receive payment directly into a bank account and use digital channels to pay school fees or save for the next season. That is how banking can make a real difference in people’s lives.”
As part of its expansion, Pearl Bank opened a new branch in Luwero last November, the first branch under the new brand. The bank now operates 59 branches, including its head office on Roscoe Road in Kololo.
Its physical network is supported by 59 ATMs, more than 13,000 Wendi agents, 14 mobile banking vans, internet banking and mobile banking platforms aimed at extending services to communities across the country.
Although the transition to the new brand is largely complete, Akora says building a strong brand is a continuous process.
“A rebrand doesn’t stop when you unveil a new logo. You have to keep engaging customers, employees and partners so that the experience matches the promise behind the brand.”
The bank is also encouraging customers to replace legacy PostBank cheque books and ATM cards with Pearl Bank-branded ones. Customers have until December 2026 to replace cheque books and January 2027 for ATM cards.
Looking back on the past year, Akora says the response from customers has been encouraging.
“Many of our customers tell us the name feels familiar because it reflects Uganda. We appreciate everyone who has walked this journey with us; our customers, staff, partners, management and Board. Their support has made the transition possible.”
She says the bank remains focused on delivering products and services that improve livelihoods and contribute to Uganda’s development.
“Our purpose remains the same to foster prosperity for Ugandans. When individuals, businesses and communities grow, the country grows with them.”
