Boda boda riders were sensitised on safer gambling practices as part of the inaugural Africa Safer Gambling Week 2026, in an engagement organised by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board in partnership with GOGO Electric.
The activity was part of the Board’s approach to taking responsible gaming education beyond traditional industry audiences and directly into communities. Boda boda riders are among the groups targeted through the Board’s community outreach programme, alongside young people, market vendors and other working communities.
Through the partnership with GOGO Electric, 150 riders were mobilised not only to learn about safer gambling themselves, but also to help extend responsible gaming messages within their networks and communities.
The riders were encouraged to regard gambling as entertainment rather than a source of income, understand their personal limits and know where to seek help if gambling begins to negatively affect their finances, relationships or wellbeing.
Davis Mutungi, a Clinical Psychologist with Safe Places Uganda, led a practical session on gambling behaviour, helping participants understand what gambling is, recognise signs of gambling addiction and know when and how to seek professional help.
The session also explored the psychology behind gambling, including how the brain can create a false sense of confidence around the possibility of winning and how this can contribute to behaviours such as chasing losses.
Participants were informed that people experiencing gambling-related harm can access free, confidential counselling and professional support through the Board’s responsible gaming programme.
The engagement also included an interactive financial literacy session facilitated by NSSF Uganda, with discussions centred on saving and making more deliberate financial decisions. The session reinforced one of the campaign’s central messages: gambling should not be viewed as a way to earn an income or solve financial challenges.
The boda boda engagement formed part of Africa Safer Gambling Week 2026, a continental initiative convened by the African iGaming Alliance in collaboration with regulators and supported by industry associations, operators and safer gaming organisations across Africa. The Week promotes safer gambling, informed decision-making, player protection and greater awareness of where people can access help.
In Uganda, the campaign builds on ongoing responsible gaming interventions by the Board, including community and school sensitisation, self-exclusion mechanisms, counselling and referral services.
