Milton
Ugandan senior commercial and marketing leader George Milton Mukula has been appointed Commercial & Product Development Lead at MMD Steel Group, an African steel manufacturing group with operations across multiple African markets, marking a major step in his career from East African commercial leadership into a broader Pan-African mandate.
Mukula will be based in Ghana, where he will work with and support commercial teams across Ghana, Burkina Faso, Benin, Angola, Mali, Niger, Togo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.
His mandate will span commercial performance, product development, market development, exports, route-to-market and market expansion, supporting MMD Steel Group’s ambitions to strengthen its presence and commercial footprint across Africa.
The appointment places Mukula at the intersection of steel, commercial strategy, product development, and African market expansion—areas that closely align with the experience he has accumulated over more than 18 years in Sales, Marketing, and Commercial leadership.
A Pan-African Role Built on Broad Commercial Experience
Mukula’s appointment comes after a career deliberately built across several major commercial sectors.
His professional journey includes Bidco Oils Uganda Ltd, Uganda Breweries Ltd/Diageo, Airtel Uganda Ltd, and most recently Uganda Baati Ltd, among other organizations. His four years at Uganda Baati Limited, a member of the Safal Group, gave him specialised experience in the steel and building solutions industry.
Together, these experiences have created a broad commercial foundation that is highly relevant to his new Pan-African assignment. He is therefore, not entering the steel industry for the first time, but taking hands-on experience from a major East & Southern African steel group and applying it to a much broader Pan-African commercial mandate.
His understanding of both industrial products and the commercial mechanisms required to move those products through markets gives him a strong foundation for his responsibilities at MMD Steel Group.
The French Connection
Another distinctive capability Mukula brings to the new assignment is his longstanding connection with the French language. Before entering Sales and Marketing, he studied French for six years and taught French for two years. That early investment is now particularly relevant because his new portfolio includes several Francophone African markets, alongside Anglophone markets.
His responsibilities will extend into markets such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Benin, Togo, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Operating effectively across these markets requires more than commercial knowledge. It requires an appreciation of language, culture, customer behaviour, business practices and local market dynamics.
His French background therefore adds another layer to his ability to engage with Africa’s diverse commercial landscape.
Product Development Meets Market Development
At MMD Steel Group, Mukula role goes beyond traditional marketing. As Commercial & Product Development Lead, he will be positioned to connect what the market needs with what the business develops and delivers.
Academic and Professional Foundation
Milton’s industry experience is complemented by a strong academic and professional marketing foundation.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), a Master Of Business Administration in Marketing, a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing and a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Transformation in Global Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM-UK), a Diploma in Business Studies from Makerere University and a Certificate in Project Planning from ICDL Africa.
He is also a CIM professional tutor, combining practical industry experience with professional marketing education.
This combination of academic knowledge, industry experience and cross-sector commercial exposure strengthens his ability to operate at both strategic and practical levels.
Why Africa, Why Steel, Why Now?
Africa’s urbanisation, infrastructure development, housing demand and industrialisation continue to create significant opportunities for the steel and construction industries.
For an expanding steel group, however, opportunity alone is not enough.
Success depends on understanding markets, developing the right products, establishing effective routes to market, building strong distribution networks, understanding customers and creating sustainable commercial models.
This is precisely where Mukula’s experience becomes relevant.
His new assignment allows him to bring together the lessons learned across FMCG, telecommunications and steel and apply them to a portfolio of African markets.
From Kampala to Accra, Ghana
His move to West Africa’s Ghana represents more than a geographical relocation. It represents a step from market-level commercial leadership into a broader Pan-African commercial and product development role.
From Bidco Oils Uganda to Uganda Breweries/Diageo, from Airtel Uganda to Uganda Baati and the Safal Group, each chapter has added another layer to his commercial capability.
Based in Ghana, Milton now takes on the challenge of helping develop markets, build commercial opportunities, support product development and drive growth across multiple African countries.
